{"id":3224,"date":"2014-09-03T19:32:47","date_gmt":"2014-09-03T23:32:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inflowinventory.com\/support\/article\/3224\/im-having-trouble-with-multi-user-mode-connecting-to-my-server\/"},"modified":"2024-06-20T15:04:11","modified_gmt":"2024-06-20T19:04:11","slug":"im-having-trouble-with-multi-user-mode-connecting-to-my-server","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/article\/55379740\/im-having-trouble-with-multi-user-mode-connecting-to-my-server\/","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m having trouble with multi-user mode \/ connecting to my server in inFlow On-Premise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In multi-user mode, one computer acts as a server (where all the data is stored) and other computers (clients) connect to it to view and edit the database there. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, the error &#8220;<\/span><b>inFlow was unable to connect to the server<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; occurs when a client computer has trouble communicating with the server.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re having trouble connecting computers to the same database, there are a few things to check:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#version\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check that all computers are running the same version of inFlow<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#firewall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check your firewall and antivirus settings even if they haven&#8217;t caused an issue before<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#connecting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try a different way of connecting<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#network\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check that network sharing is on, or that you&#8217;re on the same network<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#advanced\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other advanced things to try<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"version\"><b>1. Check that all computers are running the same version of inFlow<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the server and client are not on the same version of inFlow, it will fail to connect. Please see this article for more information on\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/article\/40763394\/im-running-a-different-version-of-inflow-than-the-server-computer-what-do-i-do\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what to do if you&#8217;re running different versions.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to check that both computers are using the same version of inFlow:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>On the server computer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> go to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Menu &gt; Options &gt; About inFlow<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You\u2019ll see the version number in the resulting pop up:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23138 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224_2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224_2.png 486w, https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224_2-257x300.png 257w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/div><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>On the client computer,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0in your Windows Start Menu, search for and click <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Control Panel &gt; Programs and Features<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and look for inFlow On-Premise in your list of programs. If &#8220;Version&#8221; is not a column listed, right-click on the header to include it:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23139 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/kb12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"909\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/kb12.png 909w, https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/kb12-300x196.png 300w, https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/kb12-768x501.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 909px) 100vw, 909px\" \/><\/div><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"firewall\"><b>2. Check the firewall and antivirus settings or disable them temporarily<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you don&#8217;t suspect it to be the cause, make sure that inFlow is added as an exception to your antivirus program and allowed through Windows Firewall <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the server AND client computer(s)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These programs can block clients from communicating with the server computer. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Consider re-adding inFlow as an exception to your antivirus and firewall programs in case their settings have changed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Adding inFlow as an exception to your antivirus program:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try temporarily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/article\/22470\/how-do-i-disable-my-antivirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disabling any antivirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or firewall programs on both the SERVER and CLIENT computers. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If disabling the antivirus worked, you can add an exception for our program by following the instructions in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/article\/22470\/how-do-i-disable-my-antivirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Allowing inFlow through Windows Firewall<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In your Windows <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> menu (or hit your Windows key), search and open \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow an app through Windows firewall\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the resulting screen (see screenshot below), click <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change settings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow another app\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add the following files to your Windows firewall (they can be found in: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><code>C:\\Program Files\\inFlow Inventory\\<\/code>)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the server computer, you will need to add:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inFlow.exe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inFlowService.exe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inFlowUtilities.exe<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the client computer, you will need to add:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inFlow.exe<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure that everything that includes \u201cinFlow\u201d in its name has all checkmarks filled, then click <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OK<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to save your changes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><div class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27091\" src=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"849\" height=\"661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224.png 849w, https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224-768x598.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 849px) 100vw, 849px\" \/><\/div><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve checked that inFlow is an allowed program and added as an exception to your firewall and antivirus programs, try connecting to you server once more &#8211; if unsuccessful, move on to the next step!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"connecting\"><b>3. Try a different method of connecting<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verify that the inFlow <\/span><b>SERVER<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Computer Name is correct when entering it on your <\/span><b>CLIENT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> computer. The easiest way to get this information is to log into inFlow from the server computer and select <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Menu &gt; Options &gt; Connection Settings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The program should show you the (server) computer name as well as the IP address. Please double check the server name.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23140 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224_1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224_1.png 486w, https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/3224_1-257x300.png 257w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/div><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try typing in the server IP address instead of the server name when entering it on your <\/span><b>CLIENT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> computer (as described in the previous step you can get your IP address via inFlow <\/span><b>SERVER<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> computer, see screenshot above).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you recently updated to version 3.6 the port number may be incorrect for your client computers. Please try to reconnect with the port :5700 attached to the end of the ip address. (for example: 192.168.2.131:5700)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click Start (or hit your Windows key) and type in &#8220;services&#8221; to bring up the local services window. Scroll until you see something that says &#8220;Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service&#8221;. Check that the startup type is set to &#8220;Manual&#8221;, and that it is running. If it isn&#8217;t, you can right-click to start it, and also right-click &gt; Properties &gt; set Startup Type to &#8220;Manual&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"network\"><b>4. Check that network sharing is on, or that you&#8217;re on the same network<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Navigate to the &#8220;Network and Sharing Center&#8221; screen depending on your operating system:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WINDOWS 7 \/ SERVER 2008 R2:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">START &gt; Control Panel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and open the Network and Sharing Center.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this screen, the network name listed here must be the same for all computers you&#8217;re trying to connect together. The network is the middle icon connecting your computer to the internet (e.g &#8220;Network 3&#8221; or &#8220;WirelessNetwork1&#8221;). If it&#8217;s not the same, inFlow won&#8217;t be able to connect, so you&#8217;ll need to change it and reconnect to the same network.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure that your network sharing is on on both the SERVER and CLIENT computers. In the Network and Sharing Center click the &#8220;Change advanced sharing settings&#8221; option and ensure that network discovery as well as file and printer sharing are both on.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Windows blocks connections, including inFlow\u2019s, when you\u2019re on a public network which may be untrustworthy. If this screen is saying your network type is &#8220;Public Network&#8221;, click on the listed &#8220;Public Network&#8221; and then change it to &#8220;Home&#8221; or &#8220;Work&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>WINDOWS 8 \/ 8.1:<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hit the Windows key on your keyboard and type in &#8220;Control Panel&#8221; anywhere on the screen. Click on it, then go to &#8220;Network and Sharing Center&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this screen, the network name listed here must be the same for all computers you&#8217;re trying to connect together. The network is the middle icon connecting your computer to the internet (e.g &#8220;Network 3&#8221; or &#8220;WirelessNetwork1&#8221;). Other advanced things to try<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you see the SERVER computer on the network? Test if you can reach the SERVER computer from the CLIENT computer by pinging it. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open a command prompt:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>WINDOWS 7 \/ 10:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Click Start&gt; type &#8220;cmd&#8221; &gt; right click on cmd.exe &gt; select Run as administrator.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>WINDOWS 8\/ 8.1:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Press the Windows Key + R, hit A, and then say Yes to the User Account Control prompting your for permission.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type \u00a0ping &lt;ip address&gt; \u00a0or ping &lt;server name&gt; (swapping those placeholders for your actual server name and IP address).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16851\" src=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/55379740_6.png\" alt=\"55379740_6\" width=\"979\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/55379740_6.png 979w, https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/55379740_6-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/onpremise.inflowinventory.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/09\/55379740_6-768x402.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px\" \/><\/div><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it can&#8217;t even resolve it based on the hostname or IP address, then you have a problem with your network setup (i.e. you get an error message &#8220;Ping request could not find host . Please check the name and try again.&#8221;). <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you get the error message &#8220;Request timed out.&#8221; then it may still be possible that inFlow can connect. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you get a response that says &#8220;Reply from&#8230;&#8221; then your network is working, and the connection is probably blocked due to an antivirus on either computer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In multi-user mode, one computer acts as a server (where all the data is stored) and other computers (clients) connect to it to view and edit the database there.
