Error: “The backup file could not be restored, since it was made using a newer version of SQL Server.”

Please note: we will sunset inFlow On-Premise on July 31, 2024. After sunset we will stop selling or activating new licenses for inFlow On-Premise and stop providing support (including online KB articles).

In the meantime we will still provide technical support to customers with an active Support Plan.

If you’re getting the above error message when attempting to restore a inFlow On-Premise backup, this issue occurs when the two computers have different versions of SQL Server installed. Please check both computer’s list of installed programs:

Windows XP or Server 2003: click Start > Control Panel > Uninstall (or Add/Remove Programs).

Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 R2 or Windows 10: click Start > Control Panel > Uninstall (or Programs and Features).

Windows 8: Windows Key > type Control Panel > Uninstall (or Programs and Features).

Look at this list for anything that says, “Microsoft SQL Server”, you will either have “SQL Server 2005” or “SQL Server 2008 R2”, or “SQL Server 2014 Express LocalDB”, or “SQL Server 2014 Express” installed. Most likely, the computer you are restoring the backup to has an older version of SQL Server, which can’t read the backup made in the newer version of SQL Server.

The easiest way to fix this is to reinstall inFlow with the newest possible version of SQL Server. On the computer you are attempting to restore the data on, go to the control panel and uninstall inFlow. When it’s finished, re-run the installer and follow the steps below:

1. Click on “Customize my installation”
2. Choose “Server and Client”
3. Choose “Microsoft SQL Server 2014”, or “SQL Server 2008 R2” if SQL 2014 is greyed out.
4. Click to Install.

You should be able to restore the backup then.

Please note:

By default when you install inFlow, Windows XP and Vista will install Microsoft SQL Server 2005. It is not compatible with LocalDB 2014.

WIndows 7 and 8 will install LocalDB 2014.

So, if you are attempting to transfer a backup from Windows 7, 8 , or any computer running inFlow with a Microsoft SQL Server 2014 install, you may run into issues restoring the backup in Windows XP or Windows Vista, as they will not be able to install Microsoft SQL Server 2014.
